As a new school year begins once again, so does the BackPack Program. This program helps meet the needs of hungry kids at times when food may not be available to them, such as weekends and school vacations. With the help of many dedicated volunteers, God’s Pantry Food Bank was able to supply 3,632 BackPack bags in August and September to students across 30 schools in Fayette, Jessamine, and Floyd County.
The Central Baptist Church Boomer group began volunteering at God's Pantry Food Bank in early 2011. After their first visit, they decided to begin volunteering regularly and have been doing so ever since!
CBC has a long history of involvement with God's Pantry Food Bank. For many years, they had a competition among the Sunday School classes for which class could donate the most of a specified food item! And in the 1990s, they had large groups participating in the annual Walk for Hunger.
Several members of the group are retired educators and have firsthand knowledge and understanding of the importance of this program.
Below are some quotes from some of the CBC Boomers!
A few of their favorite things about volunteering:
“Knowing that we have done a small part in feeding kids, who otherwise might not have enough to eat on weekends.”
“Fellowship with other volunteers and a feeling of helping someone in need.”
“Our group finds our time volunteering at God's Pantry to be a great
opportunity to serve the community as well as a time for fellowship among our members.”
What I would say to encourage someone to volunteer:
“It is an easy way to help others on a regular basis in the company of friends! At the end of the packing, you know your time was well spent! And you look forward to returning again and again!”
“You will have a chance to learn about the work of God's Pantry and to realize the great needs in our State.”
Why is the BackPack Program important?
“Because kids can learn better when they are not hungry.”
We appreciate all the dedication and support from the CBC Boomers group!
