Finding a Rewarding Way to Give Back
For about a year, John Howard has been a dedicated volunteer at God's Pantry Food Bank. After retiring, he found himself with extra time and a desire to make a meaningful impact in his community.
"I'm retired with plenty of free time, and this is the most rewarding opportunity," John said.
What started as a way to stay active quickly became a fulfilling part of his routine and a chance to support neighbors facing hunger across Central and Eastern Kentucky.
Many Ways to Make a Difference
John volunteers at the Lexington Volunteer Center on Winchester Road, where he takes on a variety of tasks that help keep food moving to those who need it most.
From sorting food donations to packing boxes and stocking shelves in the pantry, his work helps ensure that food is ready for distribution to individuals and families across the Food Bank's 50-county service area.
The Best Part of the Day
When asked about his favorite memory from volunteering, John didn't point to a specific event or milestone. Instead, he reflected on a feeling he experiences after every shift.
"I think my favorite memory is the feeling I get on the ride home every day knowing I did my part."
It's a simple but powerful reminder that every hour volunteered helps make a difference.
Seeing the Mission in Action
One of John's favorite things about volunteering is seeing firsthand how the work completed at the Volunteer Center connects to the larger mission of feeding Kentucky communities.
"I know I'm helping to get the food to the people who need it most," he said. "I can see our finished tasks being loaded onto trucks and distributed."
For John, those visible results provide a sense of purpose and reinforce the importance of every task, big or small.

He also credits the welcoming atmosphere created by staff and fellow volunteers.
"The full-time staff: D'wan, Hanna, and Elise are the best. They greet you with the biggest smiles, making you part of the team. You will meet lots of fun volunteers and are guaranteed to have lots of laughs."
