God’s Pantry Food Bank is pleased to announce our 5th distribution center is now open in Morehead, KY. The addition of the Morehead Regional Distribution Center marks the last of several strategic steps in a comprehensive expansion to reach the capacity to provide hunger relief to the more than 250,000 hungry Kentuckians in our 50 county service area.
The goal for this new distribution center is for member agencies and their clients from Bath, Carter, Elliott, Fleming, Lewis, Menifee, Montgomery, Morgan, Robertson, and Rowan counties to increase their access to food, including produce and other perishable items. Before the opening of the Morehead warehouse, agencies in the area could only pick up their food inventory from the Lexington warehouse or from designated drop offs twice a month. If agencies were to run out of food, with fuel costs as they are, the agencies could simply not restock.
Currently these agencies are serving more than 26,000 hungry Kentuckians. In Fiscal Year 2015, God’s Pantry Food Bank distributed 2,898,195 pounds of food in these 11 counties. By the end of Fiscal Year 2016, we hope to increase these numbers by 15%.
Funding for the Morehead Regional Distribution Center is largely made possible through the gifts of individuals, organizations, and businesses from the Morehead area and God’s Pantry Food Bank. Ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony is set to take place October 14th.
