As we celebrate Truck Driver Appreciation Week, we are proud to highlight one of our dedicated Transportation Specialists, Eric Johnson. With 15 months of service at God's Pantry Food Bank, Eric has become an integral part of our team, ensuring that food reaches our neighbors across Central and Eastern Kentucky.
His role allows him to explore different places while still being able to return home, balancing his professional and personal life. “I have been driving for God's Pantry for about 15 months. I love to travel and be home with the family, and I get to do both with God's Pantry,” Eric shared.
Eric’s most memorable experiences on the job happen during his mobile pantry deliveries. “You know you are at the right place because of traffic being backed up, but it is also a good feeling knowing that all those people will be fed that day,” Eric recalled. For him, the sight of cars lined up, waiting for food, is a powerful reminder of the impact his work has on the community.
Eric’s experience as a truck driver extends beyond his time at God's Pantry. He has also been involved in disaster relief efforts, including during Hurricane Katrina. “I have done several hurricane jobs; Katrina stuck with me the most—seeing the destruction left behind and staying in a shelter with a lot of people who lost everything,” Eric shared.
That experience of seeing families in distress, especially children crying for toys or a hot meal, deeply affected Eric. “Seeing the different families struggle to find things and the kids crying for toys or a hot meal… this actually persuaded me to become a fireman also so that I can help the families more,” he explained. This exemplifies Eric's dedication to making a difference in the lives of others.
Eric also has a message he wishes more people understood about the life of a truck driver: “Truck drivers are humans too. We get stuck in traffic, and our trucks break down, not to mention all the road rage that we deal with. So please be nice and say thanks for what you do. That means a lot.” His words serve as a reminder that behind every delivery truck is a person who faces daily challenges to ensure that essential goods reach their destination.
As we honor all of our truck drivers this week, we extend our deepest gratitude for the crucial role they play in feeding our neighbors and supporting our communities. Thank you all for your unwavering commitment to service and for being an example of compassion and dedication on the road.
