A pilot project funded by the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentive (FINI) grant program, Bluegrass Double Dollars, is designed to to make fresh, local produce more readily available to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants. Administered by the Bluegrass Farm to Table and Blue Grass Community foundation, Bluegrass Double Dollars will double the purchasing power at the five Lexington Farmers’ Market locations, Good Foods Co-op, and Lexington Market East End.
According to their website, “SNAP users who make a qualifying SNAP purchase of at least $10 at the Lexington Farmers’ Market or Good Foods Co-op will receive a token (Lexington Farmers’ Market) or voucher (Good Foods Co-op) for $10, and SNAP users who make a qualifying SNAP purchase of at least $5 at Lexington Market East End will receive a $5 voucher. All vouchers and tokens can be used toward the purchase of locally produced fruits and vegetables, including fresh, frozen, or canned local fruits and vegetables, local fruit and vegetable transplants, and local herbs.”
