The need is growing for emergency food assistance not just during the holidays but throughout the year. God’s Pantry has seen a 27% increase in the demand for emergency food assistance in 2008. Emergency Food Box68% of God’s Pantry’s clients have an annual household income of less than $10,000. The Emergency Food Box Program provides hungry families and individuals in Fayette County with a 7 day supply of wholesome food. Those in need of assistance are referred by 220 local churches and social service agencies to one of our six neighborhood food pantries. An individual may receive a food box up to four times within a six-month period. Clients are allowed to choose the food that makes up their food box. The method is called: “Client’s Choice.”The clients are given an opportunity to pick food items to form a nutritional food box. Food boxes are prepared from both donated and purchased food and contain the items necessary to prepare enough meals for seven to ten days. More than 16,000 households in Fayette County received food through our Emergency Food Box Program in 2008. Sadly, 42% of these clients are children. Many of us don’t realize just how close we are to needing assistance. Unfortunate circumstances, sickness or other troubles may put us in need without any warning. God’s Pantry’s Emergency Food Box program helps to ensure that even in these times of need, we can put food on the table.
